JMHS: Triston, congratulations on being named James Madison High School's Graduate of the Year! You've faced some unique challenges during your journey. Can you tell us about them?
Triston: Throughout my journey at James Madison High, I have faced unique challenges as a high-functioning autistic individual who was non-verbal until the age of three. Overcoming the barriers of overwhelming anxiety, sensory sensitivities, social fears, and dyslexia has not only shaped who I am but has also ignited a relentless spirit of resilience within me.
JMHS: That's incredibly inspiring. How has your experience on the autism spectrum influenced your approach to life?
Triston: My experience on the autism spectrum has taught me the profound value of perseverance and maintaining a positive outlook, even in the face of adversity. I have dedicated myself to not only achieving my goals but also surpassing them, proving that every obstacle is an opportunity for growth.
JMHS: It sounds like your education has played a significant role in your success. How has the school impacted you?
Triston: I am immensely grateful for the supportive environment at James Madison High, which has been instrumental in my development and success. My education here has been about more than acquiring knowledge; it has been about developing the confidence and skills to navigate both familiar and unknown paths.

JMHS: You've also been involved in some meaningful volunteer work. Can you share more about that?
Triston: My volunteer work and caretaking efforts are driven by a commitment to compassion and helping whenever and wherever I can. I have dedicated significant time to helping stray dogs find loving homes, collaborating with local animal rescues to ensure these vulnerable animals receive the care and affection they deserve.
JMHS: That's wonderful. And I understand you’ve taken on a caretaking role in your family as well?
Triston: Yes, I assisted in caring for my uncle who required full-time care following a mild stroke. This experience involved managing his daily needs, from medication management to mobility assistance, and providing emotional support during his recovery process.
JMHS: How have these experiences shaped your perspective?
Triston: Together, these experiences in volunteer work and caretaking have enriched my life, teaching me invaluable lessons in empathy, patience, and compassion. They have shaped my perspective on the importance of community and support networks, reinforcing my dedication to helping others in any capacity I can.
JMHS: As you prepare to graduate, what are you most excited about for the future?
Triston: As I stand on the brink of graduation, I am not only proud of my personal accomplishments but also excited about the potential to inspire and lead others on their own paths to overcoming challenges. I am so excited to move forward on my path!
