Common Core Standards Raise Educational Quality at Online James Madison High School

on Friday, 27 June 2014.

NORCROSS, Ga. – Choosing to finish high school is the right decision at any stage of life. Although you know it may be a challenge and will take nose-to-the-grind determination, the reward of finally earning that all-important high school diploma far outweighs the time you spend studying and doing homework. And it's not just something to hang on a wall: your diploma is integral to landing a better job, starting an apprenticeship, or getting into college.

And when choosing an online high school, you want to make sure it has the right credentials and reputation in place to assure you are prepared for today's rigorous college entrance requirements and can meet the competitive demands of a tight job market. To meet these standards, the "Common Core Curriculum" was developed – and is being implemented in high schools nationwide.

What Is Common Core?

The Common Core Curriculum is a nationwide set of standards that was enacted by the National Governors Association. Designed for mathematics and language arts, these standards dictate what skills a student should have mastered by certain points in his/her education. This not only helps the whole U.S. stay on track in progressing forward, but it also helps students who move or switch schools. It will no longer matter what topic you were learning in your previous school - should the school adopt Common Core Curriculum - because your current one will be covering the same curriculum.

Who Follows Common Core?

Currently, 45 states, including the District of Columbia, Guam, American Samoa Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands, have all adopted the common core standard initiative. In those states, all schools, online or brick and mortar, must follow the predetermined course lesson plans. Because James Madison High School English and Math courses are aligned to the initiative, you'll know that the education you receive here is equivalent to what you would receive at a traditional brick and mortar high school.

There are no concrete figures depicting how many other online high schools comply with state standards. Because online curricula are able to be accessed from anywhere and not on a physical campus, it isn't necessary for them to comply with these high school standards. However, when you choose an accredited online high school like JHMS, your diploma is more widely accepted and considered reputable.

When looking to earn your high school diploma, remember to do your research. No matter if you're looking for a school with accredited high school diplomas online or in a traditional setting, you want to ensure your diploma will benefit you as you pursue your goals.
