Online Homeschooling? Set Up the Perfect Study Area

If you are a parent involved in online homeschooling, you know how important it is for your children to have a quiet study space. For a study area to be conducive to learning, it should also be clean and organized. Here are some tips for creating the ideal place for your child to work.

Pick a spot. Every student has different needs. Chances are your child knows what type of setting works best for him or her when it comes to being productive. Make a few suggestions. Would he prefer to work in a solitary space? Would she rather set up a workplace near an adult for when she has questions?

Consider your storage needs. One of the biggest mistakes online homeschoolers make is underestimating how much storage they will need. Although your child can complete a lot of assignments on the computer, you will also need shelves and cabinets close by to store books and supplies where they are easily accessible.

Organize the desktop. Some supplies will need to be out in the open, but that doesn't mean they don't need to be well-organized. Keep the desktop clutter-free by organizing tools like pens, pencils, scissors, and rulers in drawers and containers.

Make it functional. Keep the area well-lit no matter what time of day with a desk lamp. A clock is also helpful for time management. Younger children can benefit from a sand timer. If your child finds it easier to work with a posted schedule, hang a whiteboard nearby for posting assignments.

Think comfort. With online homeschooling, you have the option to be more flexible than the traditional classroom. For example, instead of sitting at a desk all day, your child may enjoy working on the couch or floor. Stick a beanbag chair nearby or consider a standing desk if your child has trouble focusing.

Online homeschooling works best when parents work together with children to create an clean and organized learning environment. Those who have a plan are more successful than those who don't. Set up your learning space and you will start off on the right foot.
