James Madison High School Academic Policies
James Madison High School academic policies reflect our mission to engage students in the learning process while providing a superior quality online high school education, leading to a nationally and regionally accredited high school diploma. Our academic policies support the core values of James Madison High School: access, accountability, excellence, integrity, passion and teamwork.
Enrollment
Enroll at James Madison High School in 3 easy steps.
- Fill out the online application
- Decide on the interest-free payment plan that fits your budget
- Submit your application and tuition deposit
In minutes you will receive a reply. We will assign you a Student ID number for instant access to your personal Student Portal, where you will manage your account, submit lessons and view grades. All students start with the Orientation.
You must be at least 14 years of age to enroll. Those under age 18 must provide proof of promotion to the 9th grade and be enrolled by a parent or guardian. Students must have access to the Internet.
Transcripts
We accept transfer credits. Students with previous high school credits must arrange to have your official transcript(s) sent directly to James Madison High School within 90 days of enrollment. After evaluating your transcripts free of charge, we will put you in the appropriate grade level and learning track. Any credits we accept and apply toward your James Madison High School diploma may shorten the time it takes to graduate and reduce tuition.
We welcome homeschoolers! In lieu of a traditional transcript, homeschoolers may submit a portfolio of work, and for a fee we will evaluate it for acceptance of transfer credit. See our Homeschoolers page for details.
Learning Tracks
We offer two learning tracks, the College Prep and General Learning Track, encompassing our 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade curriculum. The 23-credit curricula for each track meets Common Core State Standards and, upon completion and meeting graduation requirements, leads to the award of a accredited high school diploma – not to be confused with a GED.
Our Student Advisors will assist in suggesting the learning track that fits your study habits and your career and future education aspirations.
Grading and Exams
The grading scale is as follows: A = 90-100; B = 80-89; C = 70-79; D = 65-69; and F = 64 and below. Minimum passing grade is 65.
Graduation Requirements
You are allowed four years to complete the James Madison High School diploma program. However, with regular study at a steady pace, it is possible to complete our program in two to three years. Minimum completion time is 6 months. Earning your high school diploma from James Madison High School requires you to:
- Complete the equivalent of at least one year of study with our school
- Earn a total of 23 credits as a combination of JMHS and transfer credits
- Pass all exams
- Pay tuition balance in full
All JMHS graduates receive a diploma, an unofficial transcript and class ring. We will gladly send official transcripts to prospective employers and other educational institutions by request.
Students who graduate with a 3.0 or higher grade point average (GPA) will be invited to join our Honor Society and receive special recognition on their diploma.
